Original · one available“A butte is a secluded hill with steep, often vertical slopes and a small, relatively flat peak. The word 'butte' comes from the French word for hill (but of any size); its use is common in the western United States, including the southwest, where mesa (Spanish for 'table') is used for larger landform of relief. I tried to imagine a volcanic landscape that I know very well due to my walks with some of those buttes that I've read about, and this painting shows how that site would look.”
