Description
One of the most familiar of all ducks, Mallards live in wetlands and occur throughout North America and Eurasia in ponds and parks as well as wilder wetlands and estuaries. The wild mallard is the ancestor of most domestic duck, and upon hatching, the plumage of the duckling is yellow on the underside and face and black on the back all the way to the top and back of the head, with its legs and bill also black.
