Description

This piece is part of my latest commission, a Texan beauty, the vibrant Green Jay with distinctive desert cacti from the Southern part of the state.

The Green Jay, or Cyanocorax luxuosus, is a distinctly tropical bird species found primarily in Central America, with its range extending marginally into southern Texas. Also known as the Inca Jay, it is characterized by its vivid green and yellow plumage, reminiscent of a miniature sunbeam fluttering through the forest. This medium-sized bird, typically measuring around 12-13 inches, displays complex social behavior, often living in pairs or large groups, akin to a bustling avian community center.

Their habitat stretches from southern Texas to Honduras, and extends to Colombia and northern Bolivia, like a vibrant tapestry woven across the continent. In Mexico, they inhabit areas along the Pacific coast from Nayarit southward, and along the Gulf coast from the lower Rio Grande valley southward and eastward through the Yucatan Peninsula. In Venezuela, they are found along the entire length of the coastal and Andean mountain ranges, adding splashes of color to the lush landscapes.

Green Jays exhibit varied behavior; while they can be tame around certain areas such as parks, where they may approach picnic tables for food scraps with a cheeky curiosity, they can also be elusive elsewhere despite their bright colors. They are adept at using tools, such as sticks, to extract insects from under loose bark, showcasing their ingenuity. Known for their extensive vocalizations, they produce a range of calls, including a distinct rassh-rassh-rassh sound and alarm-like calls, and are skilled mimics, adding a touch of whimsy to the forest symphony.
