Artist's Description
The pita (agave americana, sentry plant, century plant, maguey or American aloe) is a plant native to Mexico, abundant on the Pacific coast of North America, and arrived in Spain, like many other botanical species, towards the end of the 16th century. Despite the common name "American aloe", it is not related to plants in the genus Aloe.
Its flowering cycle goes from ten to thirty years (in Spain even up to sixty years), and its most outstanding feature is that it blooms only once throughout this broad period.
Near the end of its life, the plant sends up to tall, branched stalk, laden with yellow blossoms, that may reach a total height up to 25-30 ft (8-9 m) tall. Then, it drops the seeds on the adjoining floor and prepares to die. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the liquid inside the stalks of the pitas is the origin of 'pulque', the wildlife Mexican drink.
