Description
Located above the Echaz river in the Reutlingen district, Lichtenstein Castle (Schloss Lichtenstein) was designed by Carl Alexander Heideloff and built in 1840-1842. The name Lichtenstein translates as "shining stone", and the castle has been described as the "fairy tale castle of Wurttemberg" because the modern castle, built in Gothic Revival Style, was inspired by the novel Lichtenstein by Wilhelm Hauff, a romantic and patriotic German's tribute to the work of Sir Walter Scott. In 1869, it became the official residence of the dukes of Urach, and today it is still owned by the dukes of Urach.

Absolutely beautiful! l/f When I was a child, long before the internet, my mother did some kind of contest where she had to identify the castle in the photo. I think we spent several days trying to figure it out with multiple trips to the library. She didn't win but it's a fond memory that seeing this castle always dredges up!

Thank you so very much for your endearing comment, Susan! I'm glad this castle awoke that beautiful memory. :)
