The ruby throat hummingbird is a small hummingbird with a long, straight, very slender and slightly inclined bill, fingers and feet quite small and fairly short wings. Its feathers are bright emerald or golden in the back and the crown, with white gray underparts. Males have a bright, iridescent red throat that looks dark when it is not well lit.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds generally spend the winter in Central America, Mexico and Florida, and migrate to eastern America during the summer to breed. It is by far the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America, usually in open forests, forest edges, meadows, grasslands and in parks, gardens and backyards.

After more than a decade of clinical psychology private practice in Madrid, some years ago I moved to the National Park of Cabo de Gata on the south coast of Spain and started my career as a writer. The peculiar environment in my new home made me a self-taught painter, and over the years painting has become a professional activity.
