Description
The ordinary habitat of the Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola) lays in the open and semi-open lowland areas (grasslands, rivery valleys, and brushy areas) of semi-arid South America. It has also been introduced to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and elsewhere. They are a species friendly to man, and hence it is also common to see them in the urban areas or around the bird feeders as well. The male (pictured) is bright yellow and with an orange crown which distinguishes him from other finches, and also from the females, which are usually a duller version of the male. It is often confused with the Orange-fronted Yellow-finch, a different species native to Colombia.
