Gloucester Cathedral, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the River Severn. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter.
Gloucester Cathedral, as it is more commonly known, has been a place of worship for the past 1,300 years. The foundation stone of the proper cathedral was laid around 1089 by order of local Abbott Serlo, who opted for the standard Norman design of his day, characterized by voluminous foundations and the use of the rounded arch. Later incorporations into various subgenres of the Gothic style, characterized by taller structures and more refined decorations, were made over the next 300 years, with the last major changes introduced in the late 15th century.
Today, the cathedral is one of the most prominent examples of perpendicular architecture, a Gothic subgenre that was used between the late 14th and 16th centuries and is characterized by vertical lines in tracery and panels.
As a curiosity, some of the most memorable Hogwarts-based scenes in the eight Harry Potter films have been filmed in what is formally known as the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible
The two cloisters, which feature cobweb-like vaulted ceilings, have been used as the setting for many scenes in several films. Harry Potter Fans should recognize the door to the Gryffindor communal hall and the hallway, but the cathedral has not only appeared in the Harry Potter movies. Documentaries and television series such as Doctor Who (1963), Wolf Hall (2015), and Sherlock (2010) have also been filmed in the wonderful interiors of Gloucester Cathedral.
