Ruby-throated Hummingbirds live in open woodlands, forest edges, meadows, grasslands, and in parks, gardens, and backyards. They fly straight and fast but can stop instantly, hover, and adjust their position up, down, or backward with exquisite control. They often visit hummingbird feeders and tube-shaped flowers and defend these food sources against others.
The Ruby-throated hummingbird actually takes its name from the males, which are the ones that have a dark gorget when it is not illuminated, and a striking ruby color under the light, as can be clearly seen in this scene. Another curious fact about males is that they tend to be a little smaller than females, although neither of both normally exceeds 5 grams in weight or 4 inches in length (10 centimeters).

Beautiful birds. Every year I take photos at the feeders by the patio. Later, when the mimosa blooms, the hummingbirds and the swallowtail butterflies seem to compete in not missing a single bloom. I love the background!
