Cowbirds are birds belonging to the genus Molothrus in the family Icteridae. They are of New World origin and get their name from their close association with grazing livestock (and formerly bison), which flush up insects for the birds to eat.
They are brood parasites, meaning they lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. Cowbird eggs are white to grayish-white with brown or gray spots or streaks, which makes them very common among bird species, something quite useful, as they lay eggs in the nests of more than 220 species of birds.
Male Brown-headed Cowbirds have glossy black-blueish plumage and a rich brown head, while Female Brown-headed Cowbirds are plain brown birds, lightest on the head and underparts, with fine streaking on the belly and a dark eye.
Fledgling cowbirds are a dull grayish-brown color and will be nearly their adult size. One curious thing about them is that, as juvenile Cowbirds develop at a faster pace than their stepbrothers, and are breed by foster parents, is not rare to see them being fed by birds smaller than themselves.
